Lot 2932
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 17 mm, 3.01 g, 7 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate. Irregular mint, after 324. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Laureate and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right. Rev. PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG / T✱AR Camp gate with no doors and four turrets; above, star. Failmetzger 2002, pl. 24, 353ACI (this coin). Cf. RIC 265 (for prototype). Somewhat smoothed and with a light scratch on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The coin's style unmistakably marks it as an unofficial contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. Resembling RIC Arles 265, it differs by bearing the mark of officina T, which is typically reserved for the Caesars and is not listed. Depicting Constantine I with a laureate and cuirassed bust (B5), it reflects a Trier-like style rather than Arles. Furthermore, the row of dots on the camp gate is a feature absent from official emissions.
